About Us
Our Mission
The original vision of providing a place for boys to spend leisure time in a wholesome manner has expanded to include boys and girls who need a positive influence and environment. The Lubbock Boys & Girls Club is helping Lubbock’s youth build a better tomorrow for themselves and their families.
Our History

Our organization was originally conceived in 1937, however, due to World War II, the efforts were disrupted and caused a temporary halt to youth recreation efforts. The determination and foresight of a few Lubbock businessmen ensured that boys had a place to spend their leisure time in a wholesome manner helped introduce the Boys’ Club in 1940. Lubbock Area United Way was the primary source for program operations in addition to the support of local civic clubs that were essential to the growth and success of the Club. These civic groups include the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, American Business Club, Optimist Club, and Rotary Club. The generosity of these civic clubs and individuals, helped start the Clubs in various parts of the city: John Wilson (3221 59th St), Optimist Club (3301 N. Cornell St), and Theodore Phea (1801 E. 24th St).

Nationally, Boys & Girls Clubs began admitting girls in 1989. Lubbock Boys’ Club officially became the Lubbock Boys’ & Girls’ Club in 1993 and this catapulted our expansion, services, and locations from a small beginning membership of 65 members at a rented locations to four standalone locations – John Wilson, 15 and the Mahomies Foundation Unit (formerly Optimist Club), Theodore Phea, J.T. & Margaret Talkington (2603 Kewanee Ave), and a one school-based location in Shallowater (1100 Avenue K). We have reached countless youth with our community based and building centered locations that provide a safe, affordable place for young people for afterschool and summer care. We have maintained the constant mission to meet the needs of Lubbock youth by inspiring and enabling all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. We service boys and girls ages 6-18 years old by providing meals daily to our members and using five primary areas of programming to advance youth: Education & Career, Character & Leadership, Health Lifestyles, Sports, and The Arts.
