To Accomplish Our Mission
The Boys' & Girls' Club Movement is a nation wide affiliation of local,
autonomous organizations and Boys' & Girls' Clubs of America working to help
youth of all backgrounds, with special concern for those from disadvantaged
circumstances, develop the qualities needed to become responsible citizens
and leaders.
We Practice a Set of Principals
Boys & Girls Clubs...
are for boys and girls. They have a girl and boy membership and satisfy the
age-old desire of boys and girls to have a "club" of their own.
have full-time professional leadership, supplemented by part-time workers
and volunteers.
require no proof of good character. They help and guide girls and boys who
may be in danger of acquiring, or who already have acquired, unacceptable
habits and attitudes, as well as boys and girls of good character.
make sure that all girls and boys can afford to belong. Membership dues are
kept low so that all boys and girls can afford to belong and even the least
interested will not be deterred from joining.
are for all girls and boys. Boys and girls of all races, religions and
ethnic cultures are eligible to become members.
are building centered. Activities are carried on in the warm, friendly
atmosphere of buildings especially to conduct programs.
are non-sectarian
have an open door policy. Clubs are open to all members at any time during
hours of operation.
have a varied and diversified program that recognizes and responds to the
collective and individual needs of girls and boys.
are guidance oriented. Clubs emphasize values inherent in the relationship
between the boys and girls and their peers, and girls and boys and adult
leaders. They help boys and girls to make appropriate and satisfying choices
in their physical, educational, personal, social, emotional, vocational and
spiritual lives.
Using Three Basic Methods
Individual
Individual assistance is a purposeful contact made by a Club worker with a
girl or boy on a one-to-one basis.
Large group or drop-in activities
These activities provide informal and individual involvement to help girls
and boys achieve a high level of social skill development, confidence and
participation. They allow for freedom and mobility.
Small group
Small groups consist of a small number of members who meet regularly with an
adult leader for a specific program activity or other purpose. The
interaction between the participants is as important as the interaction
between the staff, worker and participants.
Based On A Youth Development Strategy
A sense of competence-
the feeling there is something boys and girls can do and do well. A sense
of usefulness-the opportunity to do something of value for other people.
A sense of belonging-a setting where an individual knows he or she has a place
and where he or she "fits" and is accepted.
A sense of power or influence-a
chance to be heard and to influence decisions.
